Director’s comment:
This was the second of two commercials I produced for MediCinema – the charity providing proper cinemas in hospitals for long-term patients – which was shot at St Thomas’s, London.
It occurred to me that if I planned it carefully, I’d be able to shoot a second commercial on the back of the one I’d already agreed to make (two for the price of one). However, in order to do this, I needed to come up with a concept that was quick and relatively easy to shoot.
My idea therefore was to take advantage of the long corridor between the ward and the cinema where I’d be spending the greater part of the day and I based the script around ‘anxious bed-bound girl is rushed to theatre – the movie theatre!’
We were well-prepared and incredibly the whole scene took just over an
hour to shoot. It was all hand-held, but this was an integral part of the look. I shot some additional scenes in the cinema itself and that was it.
Having shot all the footage I needed, this film sat on the shelf for two years until the first film ‘Enjoy the Movie’ had run its course. I finally began the post on ‘Last One Down’, which took a further six months culminating in Jeremy Irons agreeing to donate the voice over. It had its premier nationwide courtesy of Vue Cinemas when in ran with ‘Casino Royale’. It’s still seen sporadically at the charity’s high- profile screenings and several times a week in their own cinemas
