Simon Devine
Director/Producer

Specialist skills – post production, animation & production management.

From the humble origins of assistant editor, Simon applied his keen eye, sharp ear and tenacity to become one of the most highly respected ‘post guru’s’ in London. This, together with his kind, cheerful nature, led him to being an integral part of the Commercials Unlimited team.

Simon is a highly valued, experienced producer with a comprehensive understanding of the ever evolving digital camera workflows and, with post-heavy commercials taking more and more precedence, he more often than not takes responsibility for the post production. He’s also a director in his own right, with his specialised areas being animation, CGI and SFX. There’s simply no other producer/director more painstaking or committed to the pursuit of excellence.

As well as admiring his attention to detail and trusting his judgment implicitly, everyone enjoys the time spent in Simon’s company, even after several weeks spent in the dark of an edit suite.

Simon is married and is a staunch supporter of Manchester City, as well as being a regular at Lords.

2D Flash Animation '1 x TVC & 1 x DM DVD'

This deceptively simple commercial/web movie had to be so designed to mirror exactly the existing POS and branding i.e. very flat, 2D imagery.

Flash animation was the perfect tool avoiding the temptation to introduce any element of 3D. The commercial is sound led and the voices of Lucy, her mum and the vet were provided by 'Another Tongue' involving a ‘conversational’ recording session followed by a timings breakdown on which the animation was based.

Director’s comment: ‘The first thing we had to do was to get into the brand design then adapt it for animation. This meant that many of the in-between images had to be carefully considered and adapted to avoid these looking ‘wrong’.

Children talking is always delightful and this contributed so much to the personality and charm we were able to generate, particularly for a product as unglamourous as worm prevention."

Client comment:

Agency comment: Phil Doig, The Works"We were under time pressure but CU provided us with costings and a time schedule that would let us deliver what the client needed. We were able to make the inevitable changes along the way and were able to monitor and keep control of the project, without the need to be too hands-on.

The process was always going to be hectic, but we were pleased with how it all went, and with the end result. We'll certainly work with them again."
